Did RIMOWA Quietly Update Their Handles to Soft-Closing?
Back in April 2025, we ordered an Original Cabin Plus (92556) directly from the RIMOWA website. When it arrived and we unboxed it, we noticed something unexpected—the handles didn’t snap shut like they used to.
All of our previous RIMOWA suitcases (purchased before 2025) had the signature snap-to-close handles. But this one? It featured soft-closing handles—a subtle but noticeable change.
We were surprised. Soft-closing handles have been something RIMOWA owners have quietly wished for over the years, but the brand hadn’t made any official announcement about updating them. So while it was a pleasant surprise, we weren’t sure if it was a permanent change or if we just happened to get a newer batch.
Adding to the mystery: there was no mention of this change on their website.
A few weeks later, we purchased an Original Trunk Plus in-store. Interestingly, even the sales assistant wasn’t aware of any handle update.
So it seems like RIMOWA is gradually rolling out this improvement without much fanfare—possibly because not all existing stock has the new soft-closing handles yet.
We checked the production details, and both of our soft-closing models were made in Germany in late 2024 and early 2025, so this could be a clue as to when the change started.
If you’ve purchased a RIMOWA recently, let us know in the comments—do your handles snap shut or close softly? We’re curious to hear from other owners!
